Powercrumbs raises funding from Unknown Group and Oost-NL the investment allows Powercrumbs to further scale-up their proposition to realize local supply chains in the construction industry for sustainable fuels, together with existing biogas producers and construction sites.
We’re happy to share that our founders, Edward de Jager and Hendrik Halbe have co-invested in a Dutch energy venture, Powercrumbs alongside Oost NL (though the ION+ fund), The East Netherlands Development Agency.
For every sustainable energy source, Powercrumbs finds the right destination. Founded in 2019 by Jelmer Kalff, Pieter Mans and Jan Willem Eising, Powercrumbs is the world's first venture that has the capability to store cleaned, high pressure-biogas. Their innovative solution directly competes on price with fossil fuels, while being 100% sustainable. They are the first Dutch biogas provider and offer construction sites the most sustainable fuel currently available, as well as creating a financially viable market for biogas producers.
Over 800 million liters of diesel is used at construction sites in The Netherlands every year. Powercrumbs ambition is that by 2025, they will replace 3 million liters of diesel per year used at these sites, with clean biogas. Powercrumbs’ 100% circular solution enables a sustainable fuel chain that connects both needs: from the source at the sewage treatment plant to use on the construction site.

The investment in Powercrumbs is the third Unknown Group has made in the energy domain. In May 2021, was the investment in Europe’s largest sustainable crowdfunding platform for energy projects, Oneplanetcrowd. In September 2021, Unknown announced its shareholding in Plastic Back, who have developed a technology to break plastic down to crude oil and other valuable chemicals.

Unknown’s founders have invested in Powercrumbs alongside Oost NL (through the ION+ fund) through Impact Tech Ventures, an investment fund that has received the Seed Capital facility of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, de Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (“RvO”). RvO is a government agency which operates under the supervision of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy.

Powercrumbs haalt financiering op bij Unknown Group en Oost NL
Bouwplaatsen verduurzamen met biogas van waterzuiveringsinstallaties
De Arnhemse startup Powercrumbs heeft financiering opgehaald bij Unknown Group en Oost NL. Het bedrijf ontwikkelt de technologie om biogas bij rioolwaterzuiveringsinstallaties af te vangen, te zuiveren en op te slaan. Het biogas kan vervolgens op bouwplaatsen als brandstof worden ingezet in plaats van diesel. Met de investering wil Powercrumbs verder opschalen en lokale ketens realiseren met andere biogasproducenten en eigenaren van bouwplaatsen. Oost NL verstrekt de financiering vanuit ION+.
Op bouwplaatsen in Nederland wordt jaarlijks meer dan 800 miljoen liter diesel gebruikt door graafmachines, kranen, aggregaten en ander zwaar materieel. Powercrumbs heeft de ambitie om in 2025 drie miljoen liter diesel per jaar te vervangen door schoon biogas. Powercrumbs ontwikkelt een technologie die biogas bij rioolwateringsinstallaties afvangt, zuivert en opslaat. Nederland telt honderden waterzuiveringsinstallaties, die rioolslib zuiveren en het schone water de rivieren in pompen. Waterschappen zetten het slib om in biogas en dat biogas zetten Powercrumbs om in schoon en bruikbaar biogas voor de bouwplaats. De oplossing van Powercrumbs maakt een duurzame brandstofketen mogelijk en biedt een oplossing voor twee uitdagingen: het voorkomen van onnodig ‘affakkelen’ van biogas en het gebruik van duurzame brandstof op de bouwplaats.
Biogas niet meer affakkelen
Het biogas uit rioolslib wordt nu vaak afgefakkeld door waterzuiveringsinstallaties. “Dat affakkelen is vervuilend en zonde, want het is een schone brandstof die je nuttig kunt gebruiken”, zegt Jan Willem Eising, medeoprichter van Powercrumbs. Behalve voor bouwplaatsen, kan het opgevangen biogas ook op andere plekken gebruikt worden. “Dan kun je denken aan plekken waar geen of nauwelijks een vaste netstroomaansluiting is, bijvoorbeeld bij festivals, als warmtevoorziening of voor datacentrums”, schetst Eising.
Twee jaar geleden startte Eising, samen met zijn compagnons Jelmer Kalff en Pieter Mans, met Powercrumbs. Een eerste systeem is sinds een ruim half jaar operationeel bij een waterzuiveringsinstallatie in Renkum. “Het gaat eigenlijk heel goed. We draaien op de eerste bouwplaats en het blijkt een hele betrouwbare energiebron voor het bouwbedrijf en ook het systeem op de waterzuivering draait goed”, zegt Eising.
Investering om verder op te schalen
Powercrumbs kan met de investering nieuwe systemen uitrollen bij andere rioolzuiveringsinstallaties. “We zijn met Unknown Group en Oost NL in zee gegaan vanwege hun ervaring in het opzetten van succesvolle ondernemingen, hun commerciële bereik en hun financiële expertise. Wij geloven dat we met deze samenwerking echt een enorme impact kunnen maken voor een duurzame toekomst in Nederland en daarbuiten", vertelt Eising.
"Powercrumbs is een investering met veel potentie. Aangezien het biogas op bouwplaatsen wordt gebruikt, zal het de CO2-voetafdruk aanzienlijk verkleinen, daarmee past de investering bij de doelstellingen van ION+. We zijn ervan overtuigd dat het team de grote ambities kan waarmaken door gebruik te maken van de technologie", zegt Jeroen Gierveld, investment manager Energy bij Oost NL. Oost NL verstrekt de investering vanuit ION+. ION+ is een innovatiefonds voor mkb’ers in Gelderland en wordt gefinancierd door de provincie Gelderland en een bijdrage uit het Europese subsidieprogramma OP-Oost.

KVK Innovatie Top 100
Powercrumbs was een van de 100 bedrijven die op de lijst stond bij de KVK Innovatie top 100 en was in 2021 een van de genomineerden voor de Jan Terlouw Innovatieprijs. Het bedrijf is lid van het netwerk van Kiemt, de stichting die Oost-Nederlandse bedrijven in de energie- en circulaire sector verder helpt bij innovatie.
